WRITTEN IN STONE

Where Stones are Found I

hardly noticed
a stone happens

it asks nothing
takes nothing

on the hillside,
it listens to rain

on the beach
to surf

it shoulders
the burnishing wind

revision
is by subtraction

I hold
its steady hardness

and know
the world’s oldest story.

Where Stones are Found II
