Ceaselessly Leafy Spring
          (Homage to Wendell Berry)

Ceaselessly leafy spring
Your grace-notes in wavelengths of green,
Gather my garden of wild hopes & weeds
Lost & found among moonflower mists
Hiding in the heart of light & shadow
Scatter the secret of bird-songs & seeds . . .

This poem of xylem & phloem
Written out in concentric rings,
Unrolls like a scroll from some ancient wood,
Whispering through mulch & dead leaf matter
On the quiet side of underground water
And the blank white page of winter . . .

Ceaselessly leafy spring
Keyed to the burgeoning rhythms of earth
Cross-pollinate these syllables & sighs,
Traced out in the silent roots of words
Turning eternally, repeated in rhyme,
Transfiguring the eye!
